You're excited to connect your smart lock to Airbnb, but you need to know how it works for your existing bookings—here's the info!

How it works for guests who have already checked in

If you’re hosting guests at your place when you connect your smart lock to Airbnb, new codes won’t be generated and shared with these guests. Your guests can continue to access your place using the check-in method and instructions you already provided.

If your previous check-in method was a smart lock, any codes you provided them will still work—when connecting your smart lock to Airbnb, any codes you’ve added to your lock will never be modified or removed.

If a trip change request is accepted for a current booking

When a trip change is made to a booking that’s in progress, a new code will be automatically generated and shared with your guests for this booking. The guests’ new smart lock code—and instructions for how to use it—will be added to their Airbnb trip guide at this time.

Your guests can continue to access your place using the check-in method and instructions you already provided, or they can access your place using the new code.

Keep in mind: If your previous check-in method was a smart lock and they’ll continue accessing your place using a code you shared, you may need to manually adjust when their code is active in your smart lock app. When connecting your smart lock to Airbnb, any codes you’ve added to your lock will never be modified or removed.

How it works for guests with upcoming bookings

Your guests for any upcoming bookings will automatically receive their unique code—along with info that their check-in method has been updated—as soon as you connect your smart lock to Airbnb. Their smart lock code and how to use it will also be added to their Airbnb trip guide, alongside your place’s address and check-in and checkout times.

Guests’ codes will also be sent to them in their reminder emails 8 days and 2 days before their trip, if applicable. If they’ve opted to receive SMS or push notifications, we’ll send them a notification on the day of check-in that contains their code and how to use it to access your place. Guests can always access their smart lock code via their Airbnb trip guide.

Important: This only applies to upcoming bookings. New codes won't be shared with guests for bookings that have already started.

What happens to codes you’ve already shared with guests

If your previous check-in method was a smart lock, any codes you’ve provided to your guests will still work—when connecting your lock to Airbnb, codes that you’ve added to your smart lock will never be modified or removed. 

Connecting your smart lock to Airbnb is only available to certain Hosts with listings in the US or Canada. Find out more about which Hosts are eligible to connect a smart lock to Airbnb.
