Built in the 17th century to protect the coast from the pirates of North Africa, it is located on a cheese-shaped rocky hill, thus obtaining the name Castelo do Queijo (Cheese Castle).

It was built in the 16 th century for coastal defense against pirate raids from North Africa. It is also known as Castle Cheese because, according to tradition, it was built on a round granite rock, with a similar shape to that of a cheese.
